The Research and Special Programs Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation has proposed changes to the Hazardous Materials Regulations that will bring them in line with international standards.

Since 1990, RSPA has made several changes to U.S. hazmat rules aimed at facilitating the international transportation of hazardous goods. The latest proposed changes are based on new United Nations recommendations and other international shipping codes that take effect next year.
The proposal affects shipping names, hazard classes, packing groups, packaging authorization, as well as air transport quantity limitations and vessel stowage requirements. RSPA has also proposed changes to safety requirements for intermediate and bulk containers and UN portable tanks.
The changes are discussed in detail in the Oct. 23 edition of the Federal Register, which can be accessed on the Internet at www.nara.gov/fedreg.
