The Virginia Department of Transportation will be shutting down lanes on I-95 near the Springfield Interchange this week to work on a massive reconstruction project on what has become known as the "Mixing Bowl."

One lane will be closed on the northbound side of I-95 from Exit 169 to Commerce Street Bridge, which is under construction, while two lanes will be shut down from Route 644 to the bridge as well.
On the southbound side, one lane will be closed on the stretch from the Commerce Street Bridge to the Franconia-Springfield Parkway, along with the two left I-95 southbound lanes between I-495 and Route 644 for bridgework and steel erection.
The Mixing Bowl, located outside Washington, DC, was designated as one of the 10 worst bottlenecks in the country by a study done for the American Highway Users Alliance last year.
