Harbor truck drivers in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oakland, Calif., plan to participate in Teamster-sponsored rallies today, a prelude to a set of international rallies scheduled for Oct. 4.

According to the Journal of Commerce, the International Transport Workers Federation in London will sponsor public demonstrations in 65 countries to protest extensive driver hours.
The Teamsters, who have been organizing port truckers nationwide for the past year, plan to hold rallies on Oct. 4 in 15 port cities to push for higher wages, shorter work days and fuel surcharges that are passed on 100% to the drivers, said Ron Carver, a spokesman for the Teamsters harbor division in Washington.
