Kenworth is the latest truck maker to announce layoffs due to lower truck sales.

The Paccar subsidiary will lay off 500 of its 1,600 employees at its Chillicothe, Ohio, plant next month.
According to published reports, Kenworth is eliminating the second shift at the plant Sept. 18. The plant will also be idled for two weeks starting Aug. 29 to prepare for the layoffs.
Plant officials say they see the situation as short term. Workers were disappointed, but not surprised. Freightliner, International and Peterbilt have all announced layoffs this month.
Workers will be let go based on seniority, not the shift that they work. The company has asked for volunteers and for workers to take early retirement. Both office and production workers will be affected. The plant is not unionized.
