Transplace.com, the Internet-based global logistics alliance formed by six of the country's largest trucking companies, announced it has chosen Ariba and IBM to create and operate what it says will be one of the world's largest transportation e-marketplaces.

Transplace.com was announced in March by Covenant Transport, J.B. Hunt, M.S. Carriers, Swift Transportation, U.S. Xpress and Werner Enterprises. Since the announcement, its membership has grown to 1,500 carriers, representing 220,000 tractors, 800,000 trailers and millions of tires.
Ariba Marketplace and Ariba Dynamic Trade Software will provide browser-accessible auctions, reverse auctions, and procurement services on the Internet. IBM Global Servies will provide consulting services, web hosting and systems integration for Transplace.com's procurement system.
"Ariba and IBM technologies are already leading many of the world's largest e-markets, and their experience will give Transplace.com a sold technology foundation to streamline our procurement process and create efficiencies and cost savings for both our member carriers and suppliers," said Dr. Jun-Sheng Li, CEO of Transplace.com.
Transplace.com began operations July 1.
