Cardinal Logistics Management, Concord, N.C., has sold its flatbed division to C & T Holding, the parent company of Birmingham, Ala.-based Deaton.
.
The sale will allow Cardinal to expand its other divisions, including Cardinal Freight Carriers, Cardinal Dedicated Delivery, and Cardinal Logistics.
Tom Hostetler, President of Cardinal Logistics Management, said the flatbed unit did not complement the company's other service offerings or fit into its long-term strategic plan.
"The flatbed business has unique characteristics and the value we bring is based on fulfilling the unique service requirements of each individual customer," says Deaton President Jerry Crews. "This acquisition will allow Deaton to expand its workforce with Cardinal's existing, trained, professional drivers."
The Cardinal flatbed operations will remain intact with current management and will operate as a separate entity under the name Cardinal Flatbed Carriers, Inc., as a sister company to Deaton. Corporate support activities will be transferred to Deaton's Birmingham corporate offices.
Deaton currently operates a linehaul fleet of about 350 trucks. The fleet is made up of 225 company-owned trucks and 125 trucks leased from independent contractors, pulling 650 company-owned flatbed trailers.
