A chemical leak from a tractor-trailer caused the evacuation of a Slidell, La., truck stop last week, stranding nearly two dozen drivers for four hours.

In an article published in The Times-Picayune, the liquid leaked from a punctured 55-gallon drum before the wind blew the poisonous gas across the TA Travel Center parking lot. The busy truck stop, along with a nearby Super 8 Motel, was shut down while hazardous materials crews cleaned up the mess.
The spilled chemical, called diethylenetriamine, is a liquid corrosive and is a low-level explosive, said Slidell police.
According to police, the leaking barrel was in the rear trailer of a double-trailer semi owned by R&L Carriers, Wilmington, Ohio. The damage was caused when the drum tipped over while in transit from Houston.
