The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has launched an inspection program in Illinois, Wisconsin and Ohio aimed at increasing safety for workers and motorists in construction zones.
In the last five years, there have been 54 fatalities at road construction zones in the Midwest, the agency said. Most fatalities involved workers who were struck by motorists and construction vehicles.
OSHA is working with the road building industry, labor organizations, state police, and state transportation departments to better understand the hazards of road construction work. The agency also meets regularly with road construction contractors to make construction zones safer for workers and motorists.
OSHA expects the number of road construction zones nationwide to increase 66% over the next six years. It plans to conduct some 300 construction zone inspections before October 1 of this year.
