Ford Motor Co. reportedly may purchase Swedish commercial truck-maker AB Volvo to protect the Volvo brand name.

Ford Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jac Nasser reportedly said while touring a Volvo plant in Sweden that Ford would not rule out a Volvo acquisition if another firm's offer for the truck-maker might endanger Volvo's brand name. Ford bought Volvo's car division last year.
Nasser added that Ford, which purchased Volvo Cars last year for $4.70 billion, wants to see the Swedish truck-making firm remain independent. Volvo also produces construction machinery.
The European Union Commission earlier this month vetoed Volvo's proposed $6.99 billion takeover of rival truck-maker Scania. Volkswagen subsequently purchased a 34% voting stake and an 18.7% capital stake in Scania for $1.62 billion.
