Sweden's AB Volvo delivered 4,658 trucks in January, down 19% from 5,738 in January 1999. Although sales declined wordwide the company said orders have increased slightly since the beginning of the year.

Demand in Western Europe remains strong, it said. Order intake in North America is "temporarily" on a lower level. Markets in Eastern Europe, Asia and South America are starting to recover.
Volvo's sales by region:
Western Europe, 2,742, down 8% from January 1999; Eastern Europe, 216, down 16%; North America, 2,317, down 33%; South America, 330, down 55%; Asia, 158, (no 1999 data); other markets, 133, down 27%.
