The Department of Transportation’s Research and Special Programs Administration is seeking comments from shippers, carriers and other interested parties regarding changes in rules for radioactive materials to coincide with international standards.

Among other things, the proposed change would lower radioactivity measurement thresholds so that more products would be covered under special packaging and labeling rules. There also may be some modifications in packaging requirements for certain types of shipments, particularly shipments traveling by air.
Copies of the latest international standards, published by the International Atomic Energy Agency, are available from Bernan Associates, (301) 459-7666. RSPA’s advance notice of proposed rulemaking appeared in the December 28 Federal Register available on the Internet at www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/aces/aces140.html.
