North Carolina has enacted a package of new safety laws to help lower the number of truck-related highway deaths.
Federal figures showed that North Carolina ranked fourth in the number of highway deaths in 1998. These figures prompted the new laws to be drafted and approved.
The new rules give authorities more power to take unsafe vehicles off the road. Major Charlie Carden with the Department of Motor Vehicles says new tools, such as devices that can check brakes, should also help. DMV enforcement officers have also increased patrols in the "Crash Crescent," a stretch from Raleigh to Charlotte along I-85 and I-40, where a high number of accidents occur.
