U.S. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell from Colorado is going back to school over his Christmas break from lawmaking: Truck driving school.

Campbell last week took a week-long refresher course at the United States Truck Driving School in Midway, CO, living at a nearby truckstop for the week.
In 1954, Campbell was an Air Force veteran in California and couldn't find any work except picking produce. A truck driver started teaching him how to drive, and he soon started driving for a San Jose, CA, fruit company. Truck driving got him through college and into a new career as a police officer.
"We do so much in Congress to regulate the lives of people, and the trucking industry is an example, that I decided to come back and see what that really means to drivers today," Campbell told The Pueblo Chieftain.
A new CDL isn't the only thing that makes Campbill an atypical senator. He's the only Native American in Congress. He is proud of the fact that he rides a motorcycle -- a photo with the bike is on the home page of his web site -- and that he is an artist who makes jewelry.
