Police have written about 600 tickets in the past month as they crack down on the I-275 beltway around Cincinnati.

The "Circle Cincinnati" effort, which will continue through Nov. 24, involved 30 police agencies in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. The stepped-up patrols are intended to reduce accidents by targeting offenses such as speeding and erratic lane changes. They were prompted by several serious accidents this summer.
Officials report the patrols are working. Average speeds have dropped from 65 to 70 mph on the northeastern stretch of the 88-mile beltway to 60 to 65 mph. The speed limit is 60 mph.
