This week marks the beginning of a summer-long crackdown on speeders along the 265 miles of I-94 in Michigan.
The $180,000 enforcement program will target both speeding motorists and commercial truck traffic. Nearly 125 law enforcement officers have attended a special four-hour training class in commercial truck enforcement. The highway carries a lot of truck traffic from Chicago and Quebec.
"It's not just a motor carrier officer truckers need to watch for," says Capt. Bob Powers, commander of the Michigan state police's motor carrier division. "All law enforcement officers on I-94 will be stopping speeders, including commercial trucks."
Powers says that I-94 typically has the highest number of fatal crashes involving commercial vehicles. He also said his office gets more complaints about truck speeds on I-94 than any other highway in the state.
