A proposal to replace Oregon’s weight distance tax with a combination of fuel taxes and higher registration fees is set for legislative review next week. A 4-cent gas tax increase is currently working its way through the state’s House of Representatives, but the issue of truck taxes still sits with the House Transportation Committee.

According to The Oregonian, Gov. John Kitzhaber has said he is willing to consider the shift from weight-distance taxes as long as trucks continue to pay their fair share of highway construction and maintenance costs. However he has expressed doubt that the latest proposal, supported by the Oregon Trucking Assn., is an equitable replacement.
