The report was presented at last week’s annual TMC meeting in Nashville, TN. Compared to 1995, when typical operating speeds were 55-60 mph, the increase of speeds has decreased tire life by approximately 12%.
Of the fleets surveyed, the 67% that have changed operating speeds in the last four years report significant increases in tire costs and irregular tire wear. The increase in speed also shortens the casing’s life for retread purposes. In the survey, 79% of fleets reported significant decreases in tire durability when running at the higher speeds.
