People who violate vehicle weight limits should be charged with a felony, says South Dakota Gov. Bill Janklow. The governor wants to crack down on overweight trucks before increasing road funding.

Janklow said Monday he will tell lawmakers that he plans to play a significant role in the debate on road funding, reports the Associated Press – but any effort to raise highway taxes must be tied to reducing damage caused by overweight trucks.
“I will not be a party to raising any additional funds to rebuild roads that we deliberately continue to wreck with overweight vehicles,” he said.
Janklow is sending a video about the damage overweight vehicles to do highway to everyone in the state who has vehicles licensed for commercial or agricultural use.
People who intentionally violate weight limits should be charged with a felony for destruction of public property, he said, just like someone who breaks a window in a courthouse.
