Cummins Engine Co.’s B5.9G heavy duty natural gas engine has completed certification for the 1998 Environmental Protection Agency Clean Fuel Fleet Vehicle Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle and Low Emissions Vehicle standards.
The spark-ignited engine features advanced electronic engine controls management, closed-loop air/fuel ratio control, lean-burn technology and integrated sub-systems. The model’s lean-burn technology is said to provide cooler combustion temperatures which result in lower levels of nitrous oxides and higher engine durability than stoichiometric natural gas engines.
Currently, more than 1,600 vehicles are operating Cummins natural gas engines with more than 130 million miles logged to date in such heavy duty applications as transit and urban buses, pickup and delivery and refuse and line-haul trucks.
