The Virginia Department of Transportation has launched an integrated statewide ITS program to improve the safety and efficiency of the Commonwealth’s transportation system.
The Smart Travel services have been grouped under one integrated, organizational umbrella to allow greater interdepartmental cooperation and resource sharing.
Some of the Smart Travel technologies and services currently in use include: Smart Traffic Centers; Smart Pass electronic toll collection and screening for commercial vehicles; Smart Response statewide emergency management services; and Smart Tag electronic registration for private automobiles and electronic credentialing for commercial vehicle operators.
