In a recent move to increase its truck fleet, Walmart is looking to add more than 500 truck drivers this year, focusing on the East and West Coasts. In a press release, the company highlighted the job search by profiling driver Robert Sullivan.

Twenty years ago, while working as a pit boss in a Las Vegas casino, Sullivan’s wife convinced him to team-drive with her. Although his wife no longer works as a driver, Sullivan has continued to drive, most recently for Walmart.

Sullivan calls the last two years the best of his career, citing perks like predictable home time and no-touch freight.

“They even dry-clean your clothes,” he said

On average, Walmart drivers earn $87,500 per year, which could increase this year by way of increases in per mile rate and activity pay and training pay.

Walmart drivers also receive training pay and activity pay for times when they are not logging miles.

“You get paid to sleep in a truck: 42 bucks to go to bed. That makes sleeping a whole lot better,” noted Sullivan.

Walmart said its drivers also get weekly schedules, which means they know when they’ll be home and on the road.

Potential Walmart drivers must meet certain standards, including 30 months of experience in the past three years and a clean safety record.
