Got Questions? ELD and Telematics

Q. I’ve heard that ELD violations aren’t going to count against CSA scores. Is this true?

A. This is true at least during the first months after the ELD mandate comes into effect. The federal government recently announced that drivers cited during roadside inspections for not complying with the ELD mandate after the Dec. 18, 2017, deadline will receive a “no points cite” that will not affect the safety measurement system that feeds into the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) scores.

While there will be no points assessed with these initial citations, the fines associated with them won’t be waived, so fleets and their company leadership should keep this in mind if there are any questions about the fleet’s compliance with the requirements of the ELD mandate.

The “no points cite” period is scheduled to end on April 1, 2018.

Q. I have an AOBRD, why do I need an ELD?

A. Technically you do not need to switch your automatic onboard recording device (AOBRD) to an electronic logging device (ELD) until December 16, 2019.
