The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is seeking public comment on a proposed amendment to the FMCSR that would establish an alternative certification process for Department of Veteran’s Affairs physicians.
FCMSA wants to establish an alternate process for qualified physicians employed in the VA to be listed on the agency’s National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
After going through FMCSA’s new testing and training program, the physicians would become certified VA medical examiners. They would then be able to perform medical examinations and issue Medical Examiner’s Certificates to commercial drivers who are military veterans enrolled in the VA health system.
The Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act requires qualified VA physicians to be employed in the VA, familiar with FMCSA standards for and physical requirements of a CMV operator requiring medical certification, and have no record of fraudulent practices related to such certification.
The public comment period ends on Jan. 3, 2017. To read the Federal Register notice and provide comments, click here.
