Employee screening provider HireRight has launched a new sleep apnea study service as part of its screening offering for the transportation industry.

HireRight’s service provides a portable testing device that can be used in any natural sleeping environment – at home, in a hotel, or even a sleeper berth – rather than requiring an overnight stay at a sleep study lab. The service can identify obstructive sleep apnea, allowing drivers to quickly get treatment, according to the company.

The new HireRight sleep study service includes concierge-level service for both the driver and motor carrier throughout the process.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 72,000 accidents and 800 deaths were caused by driver fatigue in 2013 and obstructive sleep apnea is a significant contributor to driver fatigue.

“Sleep apnea is a serious health risk for truck drivers, and it’s critical for motor carriers to help their drivers get assessed and treated for it in order to improve their overall health and wellbeing,” said Steven Spencer, managing director of transportation and health care, HireRight. “Sleep study testing is crucial for public safety and Department of Transportation compliance.”

HireRight provides on-demand employment background checks, drug and health screening, and electronic Form I-9 and E-Verify solutions for employers. For more information, click here.
