Washington could be headed in the direction of having the second highest state diesel and gasoline taxes in the nation.

Legislation has been introduced in the state senate to boosting the current 37.5 cents per gallon levy by 11.5 cents, totaling 49 cents per gallon.

The measure is backed mainly by Republicans in the Washington Senate as part of a more than $12 billion transportation-funding package.

Earlier this year a plan by Democrats and Gov. Jay Inslee increasing the fuel tax by 10 cents per gallon to raise $9 billion for transportation was offered up but shot down by Republicans.
