For-hire trucking companies added 1,800 payroll jobs in April, according to the latest estimates released from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This comes after a loss of 2,500 in jobs in March, which the BLS adjusted after initially estimating a loss of 1,900 jobs.

The number of payroll employees for the for-hire trucking has grown by more than 38,000 (or 3%) year-over-year. For April 2011, BLS reported 1,295,300 payroll jobs for trucking. That has grown to 1,333,800 for April of this year.

Both the national number of unemployed (12.5 million) and the country's unemployment
rate (8.1%) changed little in April. Unemployment dipped only a tenth of a percentage point for the month.

BLS collects these data each month from the payroll records of a sample of nonagricultural business establishments. Each month it surveys about 141,000 businesses and government agencies, representing approximately 486,000 individual worksites, to provide detailed industry data on employment on nonfarm payrolls.
