Tesoro Corp. says it will increase diesel production at its Mandan North Dakota refinery to 22,000 barrels a day.

The Devil's Lake Journal reports Tesoro's plans to increase production by 5,000 barrels daily come in response to a growing demand for the fuel in the region. The effort is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.

Diesel shortages that often occur during the busy fall harvest season in the Upper Midwest have reached levels not seen in years, the paper says. Officials cite several factors for the dramatic increase in demand seem this year, including an early harvest, flood-related work and a booming oil patch in western North Dakota.
