Greatwide Logistics, Dallas, announced the deployment of three alternative-fuel vehicles in its fleet.

Switching from diesel fuel to cleaner burning compressed natural gas, the 2012 Freightliner M2s will support Greatwide's Ontario operations.

"As the economy rises and falls with fuel prices, we have a responsibility to look for smart ways to reduce our costs," said Bill Doherty, Chief Operating Officer at Greatwide. "Through this pilot program, we will determine whether natural gas vehicles will pay dividends in terms of future fuel savings all while measuring the performance of the vehicles."

Traveling more than 250,000 miles a year, the three-unit fleet will support Greatwide's Nordstrom Ontario operations and is expected to reduce 117.8 tons of carbon and 421.8 tons of CO2 emissions per year, according to the company. Based on current fuel prices, the conversion is expected to save approximately 38,000 gallons of fuel per year.
