Swedish truck maker AB Volvo announced that Volvo Trucks will sell heavy hybrid trucks under the name Volvo FE Hybrid to customers in selected European markets.

The trucks will initially be produced in a limited series of about 100 vehicles starting in June, and will be delivered from 2011-2013 to customers in selected European markets. The trucks will be used primarily in urban distribution and refuse operations.

The Volvo FE Hybrid is a parallel hybrid, meaning energy from the diesel engine and electric motor can be used either simultaneously or independently. The engine switches automatically between the two power sources. Depending on the driving cycle, the Volvo FE Hybrid can cut fuel and emissions by 15-20 percent. Using the electric compactor on the hybrid refuse trucks, up to 30 percent can be saved.
