The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association is putting out a request for cards and letters to include in care packages for military personnel stationed in combat areas overseas as part of its Truckers for Troops project.

"We always include a variety of good things in the packages like socks, snacks, books and other items, but the cards and letters are the most popular among the recipients who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan," said OOIDA spokesperson Norita Taylor.

OOIDA's fourth annual Truckers for Troops campaign, which runs Dec. 6-10, has already gotten a head start with a donation from Shell Rotella for $5,000. Truckers have donated more than $158,000 over the course of the previous three campaigns.

During that week, 10 percent of renewal and new membership fees will be matched by the association.

Send cards and letters to OOIDA headquarters, attention to Truckers for Troops, P.O. Box 1000, Grain Valley, MO 64029. Towns or school names can be included, but OOIDA asks that writers not include last names or other personal information.
