While January freight availability was up on a year-over-year basis, the spot freight market was down 38 percent from December to January, exceeding seasonal norms
, according to the TransCore North America Freight Index.

From January 2009, freight availability rose 54 percent on the North American spot market, the fourth straight monthly boost. But the month-to-month drop was likely due to December's unsually high level of spot freight availability, not January's unseasonal weakness, TransCore says.

The TransCore Freight Index measures truckload freight volume on load boards supported by the DAT Network, including 3sixty Freight Match, TruckersEdge.net and Link Logistics, the company's Canadian subsidiary.

Brokers, 3PLs, carriers, and owner-operators in North America list more than 50 million loads and trucks per year across a variety of services feeding TransCore's DAT Network. As a result of this high volume, TransCore's Freight Index is representative of the ups and downs in U.S. spot market freight availability.
