Greatwide Logistics Services has earned the highest score given by EPA's SmartWay program.
The rating, 1.25, is given to companies that show outstanding environmental performance.

Texas-based Greatwide is a national provider of non-asset-based transportation and third party logistics services.

The score signifies that Greatwide is using the largest number of commercially available fuel savings strategies, while continuing to actively evaluate and consider promising new savings methods and emerging technologies. High SmartWay scores make carriers and logistics companies more attractive to freight shippers wanting to better manage their carbon emission reduction strategies. Companies achieving the highest score are also granted exclusive rights to use the trademarked SmartWay logo.

"Greatwide's long-standing partnership with EPA's SmartWay shows our customers, owner-operators and employees how seriously we take our commitment to environmental stewardship," said Raymond Greer, CEO of Greatwide Logistics Services. "After joining the SmartWay Transport Partnership several years ago, we began developing the Greatearth company-wide initiative to promote environmentally-conscious practices in every aspect of our business."

Greatwide has initiated several efforts to meet its SmartWay goal, including an alliance with American Truck Business Services, an auxiliary power units discount purchase program, route optimization, on-board computers to monitor fuel economy, updated aerodynamic equipment and lower speed initiatives. The company also has policies for reducing road speed and managing idle practices, which reduces the impact on the environment.

Through EPA's program, more than 1,000 SmartWay trucking and logistics companies commit to measuring and improving the efficiency of their freight operations using the EPA-developed FLEET (Fleet Logistics Energy and Environmental Tracking) Performance Model. Carriers and logistics companies must agree to improve their performance within three years and must also sign the SmartWay Transport Partnership Agreement.

The SmartWay Transport Partnership is an innovative collaboration between EPA and the freight industry to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution.
