The American Transportation Research Institute is requesting information from motor carriers and commercial drivers on how wireless devices are used in the trucking industry.

The survey, being conducted in light of recent public attention to the issue, also covers information on policies and procedures regarding cell phone use and the associated operational impacts.

"With the recent focus on driver distraction, this survey is a critical step in quantifying when and how cell phones, smart phones and other communication tools are used by commercial drivers," said Rebecca Brewster, ATRI's president and chief operating officer. "The survey findings will be included in an overall assessment of cell phone use in the trucking industry."

ATRI is the research arm of the American Trucking Associations.
