Allison Transmission will be developing commercial hybrid truck drive systems, thanks to a $62.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
This American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 Grant will boost U.S. capacity to produce hybrid systems for the commercial truck segment.
Allison Transmission has been providing hybrid propulsion systems for the city transit bus market, through support from the U.S. Department of Energy. Since 2003, it has put nearly 2,300 of these systems onto the road in 126 cities.
"The successful completion and launch of the Allison Transmission Commercial Truck Hybrid Program will directly support our nation's strategic energy goals while protecting our environment, creating new jobs and reducing our dependence on foreign oil," said Lawrence Dewey, Allison Transmission chairman and CEO.
The new commercial truck hybrid systems will be produced in Indianapolis. The company hopes to collaborate with U.S. suppliers to make the energy storage systems and other hybrid system parts for the project.
