Got Questions? Diesel Fuel Edition

Q. Is additized diesel fuel better than unadditized diesel fuel?

A. The short answer is: it depends. Additized diesel by definition contains components aimed at improving one or more aspects of fuel performance. There are many types of diesel fuel additives out there, several of which contain multiple components, and it’s important to look at each component to determine whether it’s actually useful. For instance, it’s not worth buying a cold weather additive in the middle of the summer. A fuel detergent on the other hand cleans and protects fuel system components all year, resulting in optimal engine performance.

Q. Are all diesel fuels the same?

This might come as a surprise, but they’re not! While diesel fuels are typically produced according to regional specifications that set requirements for properties like lubricity and cetane number, the addition of fuel additives can make a big difference when it comes to performance...

Q. How does diesel fuel impact maintenance costs?

General fuel quality and cleanliness can have a significant impact on maintenance costs. Low quality, off-spec fuel that may contain water, particulates or other contaminants can lead to a whole host of issues such as filter plugging, fuel system corrosion, damage to fuel pumps and injectors, poor engine performance and in some cases, damage to exhaust aftertreatment systems...
