Got Questions? Modern Telematics Best Practices

Q. When is the Canadian ELD Rule going into effect? I want to make sure I’m prepared.

The Canadian ELD Rule will go into effect on June 12, 2021. On that date, all motor carriers will have to have a certified ELD onboard their vehicles.

As of this date, there will be no grandfather period that will allow fleets that already have an ELD equipped on their vehicles extra time to have it verified as compliant. Canadian regulations indicate that providers will be allowed to update their devices via over-the-air software updates, as opposed to requiring the entire unit to be changed out. This should help make the transition and to be verified as compliant consume less time and cost. Geotab will be submitting for certification in Canada early in 2021. From our understanding, the new process will take four to six weeks to complete.
