The sale and delivery of the trucks will be handled by TEC of California, a Mack dealer with locations in La Mirada, Fontana and Oakland.
The order is part of the initial stage of the Ports' Clean Trucks Program to reduce air pollution by replacing more than 16,000 trucks currently serving container operations with newer, low-emissions models. The Ports will provide financing and grants to independent drivers and fleets to assist with their purchase of the new trucks. The Ports intend to remove all 2006 and older trucks from their operations by 2012.
The Pinnacle DayCabs are equipped with a MACK MP7 engine rated at 395 horsepower and certified to the California Air Resources Board's low-NOx Idle requirements with oxides of nitrogen emissions less than 30 g/hr at idle. The MP7 is very fuel efficient, with up to 5% better fuel economy on highway than previous engines, Mack says. In addition, the Mack Pinnacle Axle Back model with 48-inch sleeper will also be available for selection by fleets and independent owner-operators operating at the terminals.
The Pinnacle model is well-suited to the demanding world of intermodal drayage, which involves hauling shipping containers from docks to receivers, usually less than 50 miles in the case of the Ports' operations and often in heavy congestion and urban traffic conditions. The modern cab is spacious, comfortable and accommodates drivers of all sizes, with great visibility and all controls easily at hand in the cockpit-like dash. The display in the center of the dash lets drivers know when they are working at optimum fuel efficiency. The steering wheel has a near-infinite range of adjustment, allowing drivers to place it exactly where it needs to be in terms of reach and gauge visibility - reducing fatigue and promoting productivity and safety. The combination of a large curved windshield, doors with passenger-side low view windows and large door windows give drivers a better view of what is going on around them outside the truck as well. Safety is also enhanced by Mack's Roll Stability Advantage, which provides stability control and rollover protection, the company says.
The Mack Advantage chassis in these trucks is lightweight and the setback front axle provided outstanding maneuverability and wheel cut, which is critical in tight terminal operations, Mack added.
Mack also has an extensive warranty for its chassis and engine, backed by TEC of California's customer service and trained technicians. Mack MP engines have a base warranty of three years or 300,000 miles, while the Advantage chassis and the Pinnacle's cab are warranted for five years or 500,000 miles. The basic vehicle warranty is one year or 100,000 miles.
