Navistar International has been too internally focused & now wants to get closer to its customers, Truck Group President Steve Keate tells Newport editors in recent interview. But company won’t get between customers & dealers, he says. Its role: develop tools & sales approach for dealers. Possible: packages spec’d across more vocations. In the works: Internet new truck locator similar to one it has for used trucks. Keate insists they won’t sell trucks online: “We want to use the Internet to provide more timely product & service information & get more customers into dealers.” Keate has seen a downturn in orders last 6 months, expects 2000 Class 8 sales to be down 20% from ’99.

Volvo Trucks N. America is developing new services 3-4 times faster than new products, says President/CEO Marc Gustafson. Coming: a web site where customers can search new & used truck inventories; spec new trucks; pre-qualify for financing; pay-as-you-go programs that charge for miles driven & keep the maintenance/repair business in dealer shops. Gustafson says his service (vs. product) emphasis has full approval of Volvo in Sweden. Since he heads Volvo’s global sales & marketing, it’ll likely be adopted worldwide.

Paccar’s information technology programs win No. 1 ranking in PC Week’s 1999 Fast-Track 500 world rankings of companies’ most innovative use of technology. Paccar’s network aims at “Internet-everywhere nature of the coming e-business world,” says Tom Plimpton, executive vp. Programs involve all 16 plants & 13 parts distribution centers worldwide, & include electronic parts restocking at dealerships & fleets, emergency repair service locators, finance & insurance on the web, as well as digital truck design & robotics in manufacturing. Two new divisions, Paccar.com & e-Paccar, handle e-commerce strategies.

Oct. Class 6-8 truck sales were a seasonally adjusted 36,251 units, down 5.5% from September but still strong considering manufacturer reports of weakening orders, says economist Jim Haughey. His projection for ’99: 434,183 units,up 22.3% from ’98. HDT freight volume growth is at 6.9% & will likely dip to 4.3% next year. Reasons: drops in housing construction, household goods purchases, motor vehicle sales & business equipment purchases. Higher fuel & driver costs are holding carrier profits steady despite revenue gains.

Battle over emissions regs & EPA authority to impose them may go to Supreme Court. Appeals Court was 1 vote shy of 6 needed to review a ruling that put stricter soot & smog standards on hold. Since 2 of the 11 judges didn’t participate, EPA says it has good argument for appeal. Last spring an Appeals Court panel, in 2-1 vote, said EPA overstepped its authority in setting the rules.

“What none of us wants is a reprise of the 121 ABS fiasco ... when NHTSA mandated use of technology before it was ready,” says Freightliner President/CEO Jim Hebe. The industry, he says, needs to move forward with safety technology before it’s required by the government “and perhaps we’ll be far enough down the road ... to incorporate it on our terms, not Uncle Sam’s.” Freightliner’s rollover prevention system, available late 2000, will be standard on new Century Class S/T. A lane departure warning system, now an S/T feature, will be offered on Columbia & Argosy models. The S/T data logging unit can now record information before & after driver airbag deploys.

Trend to more responsive systems & intelligent vehicles will lead to EBS, but that’s probably 5-7 years away, says AlliedSignal Truck Brake Systems President Mohsen Sohi. “It has to go through an evolution. The customer has to see the value.” Company plans improvements to its ABS electronic controller through relationship with Delco & will “supercharge” development of EBS through its joint venture with Knorr-Bremse.

Shipments of Series 60 engines rose 23%.

Dana President/CEO Joe Magliochetti says strong N. American light & heavy truck demand offset shortfalls elsewhere “but our sense is that this may not be sustainable in the fourth quarter.” Company posted record 3rd quarter profit of $161.5 million on sales of $3.1 billion vs. $98.3 million profit on $3 billion 3rd quarter ’98.
