LOUISVILLE, KY – XL Specialized Trailers debuted two new trailers at the 2018 Mid-America Trucking Show held in Louisville, Kentucky in March. The company introduced the next model in its galvanized trailer series, a Mechanical Full-Width Gooseneck (MFG) and a Low-Profile Hydraulic Detachable Gooseneck (HDG) trailer.

XL's galvanized 80 MFG includes all the features on XL’s standard MFG including a full-width upper deck, a lockable toolbox with a chain rack and light and standard Apitong decking on the front, main and rear deck.

The main deck is equipped for versatile hauling, with eight D-rings per side, fourteen half-inch chain slots per side, and removable swing-out outriggers on 24-inch centers. The 18-inch loaded deck height and 6 inches of ground clearance allow drivers to transport tall loads. Manual ride height control and double donuts allow the main deck height to vary 1.5 inches in the wheel area and 1.5 inches at the neck to suit changing terrain.

In the wheel area features an easy-access angled control panel. The 9-foot long rear deck is also reinforced for a flip axle, allowing a third axle if needed to distribute the weight of the load.

XL builds its galvanized units with the same T-1 flange, 80K web as its other lowboys. The hot-dip galvanizing process creates a durable barrier between the elements and the steel, enabling the trailer to withstand harsh weather and road conditions and extending its lifetime by up to three times over standard steel, the company says. By fully submerging the trailer in hot zinc, every area of the unit is protected.

XL says galvanizing also provides additional surface strength for excellent abrasion resistance; scratches will self-repair to seal out the elements with minimum maintenance. Notably, XL’s Galvanized 80 MFG has a low base weight of approximately 15,600 pounds, offering added durability without sacrificing hauling capability.

A five-year structural warranty comes standard on all XL lowboys, including the new galvanized XL 80 MFG.

LOW DECK HEIGHT HYDRAULIC GOOSENECK

The XL 110 Low-Profile HDG features a loaded deck height of only 15 inches. With a capacity of 110,000 pounds in 12 feet, the unit is well-suited construction and commercial applications. The 13-foot gooseneck has a swing clearance of 110 inches, and the relief cut out in the gooseneck provides additional space between the truck and trailer. To save time while loading and unloading, the trailer’s long neck is easily removable through the use of a wet kit or with a power unit.

The neck also offers a five-position ride height. Based on neck position and load, the deck can be leveled as needed with the adjustable wheel area ride height. Additionally, a work light is positioned in the upper deck as an added safety benefit for loading and better visibility when monitoring the load at night.

The main decks on XL’s Low-Profile HDG’s are built with T-1 flange and 80k webs, as well as 6-inch and 4-inch stubbed junior I-beams on 12-inch centers. Apitong decking is standard on the main deck and stands up to years of wear and tear, XL says. With the 15-inch deck height and 4.5-inch ground clearance, this flat deck lowboy can accommodate loads that may otherwise require a dropside trailer.

The Low-Profile HDG offers construction-focused features including a deep bucket-well in the rear so excavator buckets ride safely without detaching the lower boom section. The wheel area includes bolt-on heavy-duty wheel covers. To decrease wear on the tires, the third axle airlift can lift when it is not needed. Finally, the frame of the XL Low-Profile HDG is prepped for a flip axle, allowing drivers to add a fourth axle when necessary.
