Test Drive Photos: Single-Rear-Axle Granite MHD

The single rear axle allows Class 7 ratings, but this one’s decidedly Class 8, with axles totaling 44,000 pounds in capacity. The steer axle is set forward to better handle weight of the plow mount and, when it snows, a long steel blade.

This six-axle FDB6000 for Ohio has three air-suspended lift axles, including a hydraulically operated rear booster that stays down even when the barrel’s empty to reduce chassis bounce.

Kenworth's new T880

Kenworth latest, the T880, is the successor to the venerable T800. It features the same 2.1-meter-wide cab as the T680, and can accommodate heavy front and rear axles as well as multi-axle set ups. It comes standard with the MX13 engine with ratings up to 500 hp and 1850 lb.

Kenworth unveiled the versatile T880 at the Mid-America Trucking Show in March. It can be configured to do almost anything, from heavy-haul to a straight truck. It's the successor-in-waiting to the venerable T800 which has been in service for more than 20 years. Kenworth has no immediate plans to phase out the T800.
