The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s 29th annual International Roadcheck has been scheduled for June 7-9.

During International Roadcheck, about 10,000 CVSA-certified local, state, provincial and federal inspectors will perform truck and bus inspections across North America.

Inspectors will conduct compliance, enforcement and educational initiatives aimed at elements of carrier, vehicle, driver and cargo safety and security.

Each Roadcheck features a special emphasis and CVSA will announce this year’s in April.

Duriing the event, inspectors primarily conduct the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is regarded as the most thorough roadside inspection. It is a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of both the driver and vehicle.

Drivers are required to provide items such as their license, endorsements, medical card and hours-of-service documentation, and are checked for seat belt usage and the use of alcohol and/or drugs.

The vehicle inspection includes checking items such as the braking system, coupling devices, exhaust system, frame, fuel system, lights, safe loading, steering mechanism, drive line, suspension, tires, van and open-top trailer bodies, wheels and rims, windshield wipers, and emergency exits on buses.

Last year’s International Roadcheck saw over 69,000 inspections with an emphasis on cargo securement.  Of the 44,989 Level 1 inspections, only 3.6% of drivers and 21.6% of vehicles received out-of-service violations.

International Roadcheck is a program of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance with participation by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation .

Since its inception in 1988, roadside inspections conducted during International Roadcheck have numbered over 1.4 million.

The event is viewed as an opportunity to educate the industry and general public about the importance of safe commercial motor vehicle operations and the North American roadside inspection program.
