LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Wabco says it will launch its most advanced collision mitigation system,  OnGuardActive, which uses a longer-range radar antenna to provide advanced warning of slow-moving vehicles and other obstructions and is effective in all seasons and all weather conditions.

OnGuardActive has a powerful 77 GHz radar sensor that sees through white outs, heavy rain, dense fog, blinding sunshine or nighttime darkness, and performs better than camera-based systems when camera-based sensors used on other collision mitigation systems may be impaired, said Nik Varty, Wabco’s president, Americas.

The radar offers up to five times higher bandwidth than 24 GHz radar-based collision mitigation systems available in the market, and covers both long-range, same-lane and adjacent-lane views, he said. This enables higher accuracy in object detection, and a more than 30 percent longer range than alternative systems. OnGuardActive can analyze traffic up to 650 feet ahead, thus recognizing impending critical driving situations earlier.

The system alerts a driver to potentially critical driving situations via acoustic, visual and haptic signals. Should the vehicle operator fail to take corrective action, the system provides active braking on moving, stopping and stationary vehicles to mitigate or prevent impending rear-end collisions. OnGuardActive can deliver partial and full braking to slow and fully stop a vehicle.

“Wabco’s new OnGuardActive is our most advanced collision mitigation system,” said Varty. “Our long-range and high-precision radar detects moving, stopping or stationary vehicles early, giving drivers precious time to manage hazardous driving situations.”

Wabco has sold more than 80,000 OnGuard collision mitigation systems in the U.S. alone, having protected customers collectively for more than 9.5 billion miles. Fleets report a more than three-fourths reduction in rear-collision accidents since using it, he said.

OnGuardACTIVE will be sold and supported in North America by Meritor Wabco, the joint venture with Meritor Inc.
