Work will continue on the I-24 Ohio River Bridge between Paducah, Ky., and Metropolis, Ill., into mid-January, and the maximum load width will be reduced.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the contractor will continue work on the bridge into mid-January. This means the work zone lane and load width restriction for both eastbound and westbound traffic at Illinois mile point 38.5 and Kentucky mile point 0.0 will remain up during the Christmas and New Year holiday driving period.

Starting Monday, Dec. 23, the present 11 ft. 3 in. maximum load width will be reduced to 10 ft. 11 inches.

Drivers should watch out for slowing and merging traffic as they approach this work zone. There is a strictly enforced 55-mph speed limit in this work zone.  Traffic is restricted to one lane with a barrier wall installed to protect workers.

The $2.1 million project includes installation of new joints and a deck overlay. The work began in September and originally was expected to take only two months.
