A sagging bridge along a section of I-43 in Green Bay has led Wisconsin transportation officials to close a part of the route in both directions, forcing detours, until further notice.

The reason is due the sinking of a pier by 22 inches on one side of the bridge and 27 inches on the other of the Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge.. The sinking was that was discovered Wednesday morning.

As investigation will take place into what caused the incident, which will probably take a week to complete. Once its completed this should give a better idea how long repairs will take and when the span will be reopened.

Traffic along the bride is estimated at 40,000 vehicles daily

The Wisconsin DOT says a signed detour using state route 172 is in place. I-43 northbound traffic can exit to state route 172 westbound to US 41 northbound to I-43 northbound. Southbound 1-43 traffic can follow US 41 southbound to state route 172 eastbound to I-43.

Police recommend crossing the Fox River at Mason Street because that bridge is designed to handle larger amounts of traffic.
