Problems with a parking brake have led to a recall of Volvo and Mack trucks. Volvo Trucks North America is recalling 701 model year 2011-2013 VHD and VNL trucks manufactured Dec. 13, 2010, through July 17, 2012, while Mack Trucks is recalling 331 model year 2011-2013 CXU trucks manufactured Nov. 23, 2010, through March 19, 2012.

These trucks are equipped with an MGM Type 24 J-series piston parking brake chamber. According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration bulletin, the brake chambers may leak pressure, allowing the parking brake to drag when it is supposed to be released. This could lead to overheated brake components and possibly a fire.

NHTSA says Volvo will notify owners and the brake chambers will be replaced as needed, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on or before June 17, 2013. Owners may contact Volvo at 1-336-393-2000. Volvo’s campaign recall number is RVXX1302.

Similarly, Mack Trucks will notify owners and the brake chambers will be replaced as needed, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on or before June 17, 2013. Owners may contact Mack at 1-336-393-2000. Mack Truck's campaign recall number is SC0369.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.gov.
