The Iowa Department of Transportation is announcing the temporary closure of the undeveloped rest area at mile post 51 on southbound Interstate 35 in Warren County, Iowa, beginning Jan. 2.

The rest area is used mostly by commercial motor carriers, but the facility is positioned on an incline and creates a hazard for winter operations.

Large vehicles struggle to travel up the incline, sometimes causing blockages to the I-35 mainline.

The rest area is expected to reopen in late March 2013.
