A group of legislators is asking the Government Accountability Office to look into the use of remanufactured parts by non-defense federal fleets.

The 18 senators and representatives, in a Dec. 12 letter to GAO Comptroller General Eugene Dodaro, asked for information ranging from the fleets' approach to parts purchasing, to the possible fiscal benefits of using remanufactured parts.

John Chalifoux, president and CEO of the Motor & Equipment Remanufacturers Association, said the letter is "a tremendous first step" toward figuring out how the government can benefit from using remanufactured parts.

"We hope that the (GAO) study will provide a baseline on government usage on offer insight on how the federal government might better take advantage of the benefits of remanufactured products," he said in a statement.

Remanufacturing supports almost 300,000 jobs, he said.

The congressional leaders in the effort are Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., and Rep. Todd Rokita, R-Ind.
