OOIDA members will get a 15 percent discount on side skirts from Freight Wing, which manufactures EPA SmartWay-verified AeroFlex side skirts.

The Aeroflex has demonstrated up to 7 percent in fuel savings in independently conducted track tests using the SAE/TMC J1321 procedure. Durable and flexible plastic panels that absorb impacts also make the Aeroflex one of the leading skirt products on the market.

According to Sean Graham, president of Freight Wing, the payback on trailer side skirts is often less than 50,000 miles.

Additionally for West Coast drivers, new rules in California are requiring pre 2011-model year 53-foot dry van trailers to have aerodynamics by Jan. 1, 2013. New trailers must be spec'd with side skirts now. For those running more than one trailer (up to 20), you can phase in trailer side skirts but you must file a compliance agreement by Jan. 1, 2012. Refrigerated trailers must also comply, although the deadline varies by model year.
