While household goods moves by members of the armed services and by federal government employees provided relatively steady business for movers during 2009, moves by individuals and corporate clients failed to keep pace
, according to the latest issue of Industry Trends from the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA).

"All household goods segments remained below 2008 levels, but the federal government's civilian (GSA) and military markets were down only slightly," said Linda Bauer Darr, AMSA president and CEO. "The volume of corporate account shipments, however, dropped nearly 27 percent in 2009 and individual moves were down 11 percent. Still, it was the best year since 2007 for both individual and GSA shipments."

Recent data suggests that the first quarter of 2010 showed an overall industry turnaround, with shipment pickups increasing over the previous year.
