New orders for manufactured durable goods were up 0.5 percent in February, the third straight boost and a positive sign for the trucking industry.
This follows a 3.9 percent gain in January, American Trucking Associations' Chief Economist Bob Costello pointed out in his Weekly Economic Recap.

Factory orders for durable goods were at their highest level since November 2008, reaching $178.1 billion in February. Factory orders grew 0.9 percent in February after falling 0.6 percent in January. This does not include orders for transportation equipment, Costello said.

From the year-ago month, total new orders gained 10.9 percent, the second consecutive year-over-year boost.

Shipments of durable goods were down 0.6 percent from January to February, which was the second straight loss. However, excluding transportation equipment, shipments were up 0.4 percent during the one-month period, according to Costello. Compared with a year earlier, the number of shipments was up 2.1 percent.
